We can assist you with your application to ensure that it meets all requirements prescribed by the Australian Government. It is a legal requirement that all international students holds a valid visa prior to the commencement of their chosen study in Australia. The Student Visa Subclass 500 allows international student to study at every level of education here in Australia.

Student Visa Information

From the 1st of July 2016, the Australian government has introduced the Simplified Student Visa Framework (SSVF) that allows international student to apply for a single Student Visa (Subclass 500) regardless of their chosen course of study.

The legislative requirements for Student Visa applicant are:
  • Be enrolled at an eligible education provider.
  • Genuinely intend to stay in Australia to study on a temporary basis.
  • Meet the English language requirements unless exempt.
  • Be covered by Oversea Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of the visa.
  • Have access to funds for the cost of living in Australia.

Under this new framework, the student's risk rating will be determined by their citizenship and the selected Australian educational provider. The risk will be used to determine the level of English competency and the financial requirements that must be complied with at the time of the visa application.

Risk rating

All eligible Australian educational provider are given a risk rating from 1 to 3. This risk rating and your passport is then used to determine the requirements for your visa application. Currently all student visa are either assessed as Streamlined or Regular.

Students with CoE from an Australian educational provider with the risk rating of 1 will have their application assess as Streamline. This simply means that the Department will not require applicant to provide prove of minimum English requirement or any financial evidence along with their application.

Students with CoE from an Australian education provider with the risk rating of 2 can still have their application assess as Streamline but this will depend on their passport. Certain passport holders of countries which the Department considered as high risk will have their application treated as Regular.

Students with CoE from an Australian educational provider with the risk rating of 3 will most likely have their application assess as Regular regardless of their passport. This would mean that the Department will require the applicant to provide evidence for both the financial and English requirement as stipulated in the legislation.

Genuine Temporary Entrant Criteria

This criteria is extremely important and many students have had their visa refused because they could not demonstrate to the Department that they are a genuine temporary entrant. According to the legislation, a student must met the genuine temporary entrant criteria in order to be eligible for the grant of the Student Visa Subclass 500. This means that the applicant must have a genuine intention to study and reside here in Australia only on a temporary basis.

The criteria that the department will examine are:
  • The applicant's circumstances in their home country.
  • The applicant's current and potential circumstances here in Australia.
  • The value of the course to the applicant's future employment.
  • The applicant's immigration history
  • Any other relevant matter
