Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482)


The TSS visa program allows employers to overcome labour shortages in their business by sponsoring skilled workers. The Australian government recognises that there are occupations which is critical to the economic growth of the country that remains in short supply. To meet these demands, the government has introduced the Short Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), the Medium and Long Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) and Regional Occupation List (ROL). Generally speaking, employers can only sponsor oversea skilled worker in occupations that are on these three lists. The minimum requirements for the Short-term and Medium-term streams of this visa class are as follows:
The Employer/Sponsor

The business seeking to sponsor an applicant must:
  • be actively and lawfully operating in Australia; or
  • be actively and lawfully operating overseas and the reason for the sponsorship is to:
    • establish a business operation in Australia; or
    • fulfill a contractual obligation.
Business Accreditation
Businesses may apply for accreditation status with the Department, which enables them to receive priority processing for all TSS nomination and visa application. 
Adverse Information
There must not be any adverse information about the sponsoring business known to the Department. These information includes (but not limited to) breaches of Commonwealth or State laws such as immigration, industrial relation or taxation. 


The Nominated Position

The nominated position must:
  • be a genuine and full-time position.
  • be within the sponsor's business entity.
  • be employed under a standard employment contract.
  • have a salary of:​
    • at least $53,900/year and
    • at least the annual market salary rate (​AMSR) for the nominated position. 
  • be subjected to the same employment conditions when compared with Australians performing the same work in the same location.  
  • have been "Labour Market Tested" (LMT). This simply means that the sponsoring business must have tried to recruit a suitably skilled Australian to work in the nominated position first.  
Visa Applicant

The visa applicant must:
  • have the skills, qualifications and work experience matching the nominated position. 
  • have at least two years of full-time work experience in the nominated position.
  • genuinely intend to work in the nominated position.
  • meet all the regulatory and licensing requirements for the nominated position.
  • have adequate health insurance for the duration of the visa.
  • meet the health and character criteria for the grant of the visa. 
​Short Term Stream

Additional requirements:
  • The nominated position must be on the Short Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL)
  • The applicant genuinely intend on stay in Australia temporarily
  • The applicant must meet the English skills criteria.
The maximum visa duration for the Short Term stream is two years unless an International Trade Obligation (ITO) applies to the position. In addition, the applicant will only be allowed to hold two visa under this stream. 

Medium Term Stream

Additional requirements:
  • The nominated position must either be on the Medium and Long Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or the Regional Occupation List (ROL).
  • If nominated position is on ROL, the place of employment must be in regional area. 
  • The applicant must meet the English skills criteria.
the maximum visa duration for the Medium Term stream is four year.
